💜 Career Well-being: The 1-sentence connection boundary

Dear Thriving Introvert!

In this newsletter, I'll cover:

  • How to protect your limited energy while keeping professional doors wide open

Last week, you learned about how to network on LinkedIn without coffee chats with asynchronous networking. This week, you'll learn what to say when someone asks to "pick your brain."

As an introverted leader, you likely receive many inbound requests from professionals or former colleagues to "hop on a quick call" to network, catch up, or ask for your career advice.

Your natural empathy wants to help, but your calendar and your energy levels are screaming no.

When you don’t have the battery for a live video call, you don't have to choose between burning yourself out or ghosting them. You can protect your boundary gracefully using a simple asynchronous pivot.

💡 THE QUIET WIN FOR TODAY

The next time someone asks you to hop on a call, and you simply do not have the capacity, copy and paste this polite, high-boundary script:

"Thank you so much for reaching out, [Name]! My calendar is completely packed with company deliverables right now, and I’m keeping meetings to a minimum to protect my focus. However, I’d love to help support you. Could you drop your questions or ideas here in our chat? I’d be happy to share my thoughts and resources as soon as I have a quiet moment this week."

OR

"Hi [Name], thanks for connecting! My project workload is incredibly heavy right now, so I'm keeping video calls to a minimum to ensure I stay on top of my daily tasks. That said, I’d still love to support you on this. If you can drop your main questions or bullet points right here, I’ll gladly review them and reply with my thoughts via message by the end of the week."

OR

"Hi [Name], thank you for reaching out! I am currently dedicating the bulk of my time to targeted interview prep and tailored applications right now. However, I’d still love to connect and share insights on [Topic/Industry]. Would you mind dropping your main questions or ideas right here in our chat? I can look them over and share my thoughts as soon as I have more time this week."

Why it matters for your well-being: This single message does three powerful things. It honors your finite energy, sets a clear, professional boundary, and keeps the door open to helping them on your terms.

You don't owe anyone a real-time calendar slot to be considered a supportive colleague or a great leader.

It happens when you’re sitting in a conference room, leading a quarterly review, and your personal phone vibrates in your pocket. You glance down. It’s an executive search firm returning your call. You spend the next three hours mentally playing chess: When can I slip away to call them back? Do...

When you log off, that same analytical energy turns inward onto your own career. You replay conversations in your head. You second-guess whether you...
